SEND

(Special Educational Needs and Disabilities)

At Mab's Cross Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all our students, regardless of their abilities or needs, have the support they require to achieve their full potential. We value each child as an individual and believe that every child deserves an inclusive education that allows them to flourish.

Our SEND Philosophy

We take a personalised approach to education, working closely with children, parents, and external professionals to create a learning environment that meets the needs of our pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Every child has unique strengths and challenges, and our aim is to foster a positive learning experience that brings out the best in everyone.

What is SEND?

SEND refers to children who have a learning difficulty or disability that requires additional support or provision to help them access the curriculum and achieve their potential. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Cognitive and Learning Needs: Dyslexia, dyspraxia, specific learning difficulties, and global developmental delay.
  • Communication and Interaction Needs: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), speech and language delays.
  • Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs: Anxiety, ADHD, emotional difficulties.
  • Sensory and Physical Needs: Hearing or visual impairments, mobility difficulties.

Our Approach to SEND Support

At Mab's Cross Primary School, we follow the Graduated Approach to support children with SEND, which involves a process of:

  1. Identification: We monitor the progress and well-being of all our students. If a concern is raised, we work collaboratively with parents, carers, and other professionals to identify the child’s needs.
  2. Assessment: Once a need is identified, we assess the child’s strengths and areas for development. This may include observations, assessments, and discussions with external specialists if necessary.
  3. Provision: We plan appropriate provision to meet the identified need. Most of the time this is through ordinarily available practice, it may also involve an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that outlines specific strategies, interventions, and resources tailored to the child’s needs. This could involve in-class support, small group work, or specialist intervention.
  4. Review: We regularly monitor and review the effectiveness of the support provided. This is done through discussions with teachers, SEND specialists, parents, and the child to ensure progress is being made.

Working Together with Parents and Carers

We believe that working closely with parents and carers is essential to providing the best support for our pupils. We keep parents informed about their child’s progress through regular communication, meetings, and reports. Parents are always welcome to discuss any concerns with class teachers.

How to Raise Concerns

If you have any concerns about your child’s learning or well-being, we encourage you to contact your child’s class teacher in the first instance. You can arrange a meeting with them to discuss your child’s needs and explore how we can provide additional support.

At Mab’s Cross Primary School, our SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator) is Mrs Bannon, who leads and oversees SEND provision across the school. The SENDCo works closely with teachers, parents, and external agencies to ensure that appropriate support is provided.
