Year One/Two - Mrs Martinus

Welcome to Mab’s Cross Community Primary School

Hello and welcome to our Year 1 and 2 class!

My name is Mrs Martinus, and I am delighted to be your child’s teacher this year. I have had the pleasure of working at Mab’s Cross for many years and during my time have taken on a wonderful role as part of the Arts and Culture team.

We are very lucky to have Mrs Hayes and Mrs Cadman, who help and support us in our classroom. In our Year 1 and 2 classes, we embark on an exciting journey of learning, exploration and growth. We aim to build upon skills and develop confidence. Our classroom is a nurturing space where every child feels safe and valued. Through engaging lessons, hands-on activities and a supportive environment, we encourage curiosity, resilience and a love of learning.

This year, our topics are Let's Explore the World & Land Ahoy, Movers and Shakers and Towers, Tunnels and Turrets.

  • Let’s Explore the World: This theme focusses on geography and global awareness, introducing children to the seven continents, five oceans, diverse cultures, and different climates across the globe.
  • Land Ahoy!: A maritime and pirate-themed topic that explores the history of famous sea explorers, pirate lore, navigation, and the geography of seas and oceans.
  • Movers and Shakers: This topic covers history and significant individuals, focusing on influential people from the past and present who shaped the world through science, social activism, exploration, or the arts.
  • Towers, Tunnels and Turrets: A theme centred on structures and architecture that explores castles, bridges, and famous landmarks, teaching children about materials, engineering, and historical fortresses.

We look forward to partnering with parents and guardians to ensure a successful and enjoyable year for every child in our class. There are many ways you can support your child’s learning, from reading together, supporting your child with homework and class projects, volunteering on class trips or school events. At Mab’s Cross, we aim to promote a love of reading, and we set a weekly challenge to read three times at home. If the reading challenge is met, your child’s name goes into a raffle each week. A name is picked at random and the chosen child gets to take home the reading satchel which includes a book, teddy bear, hot chocolate and biscuits.

We love to share our learning, activities and updates with you, and we do this through Class Dojo, Edulink and fortnightly newsletters from our headteacher, Mrs Poole. Throughout the year, you will be updated on your child’s progress through Parents Evening meetings or reports sent home. If you need to speak to me, please contact me on Edulink or come and speak to me at the end of the school day.

I am looking forward to working with your child and are very excited to begin this adventure with them.

Let’s make this year a memorable one!
