Surprised! by Henri Rousseau

2022-2023

The Take One Picture project this year became a fixed aspect of our art and design curriculum. The project allows the children to take the lead in their own learning and develop their imagination and ideas. In this project, the whole school worked on creating artwork inspired by Henri Rousseau's 1891 painting 'Surprised!' As part of this project, the school elected to complete a 'Tiger Dance' fundraising event to support the conservation efforts of tigers in the wild in conjunction with Chester Zoo. Once the artwork was completed, all final pieces were exhibited in the local children's library for parents and members of the public to visit.

For the fifth consecutive year, artwork by the school was shortlisted and selected for display as part of the gallery's Festival of Art in celebration of its second centenary year. One of the projects 'The Tiger Who Didn't Like The Rain' continues to have a legacy after the exhibition, being used as part of the gallery's long term storytelling resources for other schools to access.
