Dear parents and carers,
Welcome to Year 4. I am Miss Rothwell, and I am extremely excited to be your child’s teacher. This year I will be working alongside Mrs Holden, Mrs Robinson, Mrs White and Mrs McGivern to ensure that your child achieves their full potential.
In year 4, I hope to develop your child’s sense of curiosity, build their confidence and give them a wide range of skills that can be applied across the key curriculum subjects. I expect the children in my class to be respectful, ask questions, try their hardest and take pride in their work.
Throughout the school year, we will go on a voyage of discovery through our three topics. In the autumn term, we will become part of the mighty Roman Empire, learning how they became so powerful and how they left a lasting legacy in Britain. We will enjoy a trip to Chester to visit the ancient Roman settlement and interact with some Roman legionaries. After Christmas, we will learn about rivers and mountains, including a fun visit to the River Douglas. We will then finish the year by learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, with their mighty gods like Thor and Odin. A Viking visitor will invade our classroom for a day to help bring this topic to life.
Throughout the year, homework will be given out on Friday to be returned on the following Friday. This is to foster a sense of responsibility in the children, reinforce key concepts and keep you informed about what we are studying each week. PE takes place on Wednesday, so please send your child in their kit on that day. Finally, reading books are changed to Thursday, so please complete your three reads by then. Reading at home is one of the best things that a parent can do for their child and can create a lasting bond between parent and child full of fond memories of their favourite book.
In year 4, the children will sit a statutory multiplication table check in the summer term. They will need to know all the times tables up to 12 x 12 and be able to answer questions within 6 seconds. Helping your child at home with timetables and encouraging the use of TT rockstars can help to ensure that children enter the test feeling confident and well-prepared. The following website has a helpful simulation of the test.

I look forward to getting to know you all over the coming year and would like to thank you in advance for your continuing support of our school.
Best wishes,
Miss Rothwell
